We take a multidisciplinary, research-oriented, hands-on approach to education--one that is focused on solving problems, making discoveries, and creating opportunities. Georgia Tech's academic programs are consistently recognized among the best and prepare students for success in a world where technology touches every aspect of our daily lives.
IDEaS also creates and coordinates several educational opportunities with faculty and our members. In addition, using the South Big Data Hub's extensive talent network (and that of the nationwide hub system), IDEaS also promotes and connects with data science opportunities in the Greater Atlanta area, the South, and across the nation.
MS in Analytics
Directed by Joel Sokol, College of Engineering; Jeffrey Hu, Scheller College of Business; Polo Chau, College of Computing, this interdisciplinary program combines statistics, operations research, computing, and business, with the world-class expertise of the College of Engineering, the College of Computing, and the Scheller College of Business.
MS in Quantitative & Computational Finance
Directed by Sudheer Chava, Scheller College of Business, the program provides a strong foundation of quantitative skills for complex mathematical modeling and computational skills to implement these models using multiple statistical techniques and programming languages. It also gives a solid, practical understanding of Finance theory and institutional details.
PhD in Machine Learning
Directed by Irfan Essa, College of Computing, the program is multidisciplinary, containing courses taught in eight schools across Georgia Tech: The Schools of Computational Science and Engineering, Computer Science, Interactive Computing, Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Industrial and Systems Engineering, and Mathematics.
IDEaS Short Courses, Fellowships and Workshops
IDEaS works with faculty and our members and sponsors to create customized data science and scientific computing workshops of variable duration and skill levels that students, researchers, and members or partners of IDEaS can attend. Past workshops have been taught on introductory Python Programming and GitHub, Python modules for scientific computing, databases, numerical linear algebra, and machine learning. The workshops are useful to receive training on topics not covered in existing courses, to fill skill gaps or meet admissions requirements prior to entering more extensive educational programs, or to update and broaden workforce skills.
Several short courses, and other opportunities like sponsored fellowships are coordinated by IDEaS, and developed with faculty and IDEaS sponsors to complement academic degrees, develop relevant skills, and enhance industry-academic relations and cross-college collaboration within Georgia Tech. We work to connect faculty or students with problems in data-intensive science and engineering applications to strengthen the value of research and education. In addition, we seek and offer opportunities to train data scientists in industry through summer courses and short traineeships.

Data Science and Analytics Bootcamp
Directed by Georgia Tech's Professional Education division.
The part-time program covers a broad array of technologies like Excel, Python, JavaScript, SQL Databases, Tableau, and more over the course of 24 intensive weeks on weeknights or weekends. Professional Education is also planning the launch of a future online version of this bootcamp. Visit the Data Science & Analytics Bootcamp page to request information about course curriculum and admissions requirements.
Civic Data Science Internship
Directed by Ellen Zegura, College of Computing; Chris LeDantec, Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts
The Civic Data Science program is an intensive, ten-week paid internship experience that places students on multidisciplinary teams working under the supervision of a professor on a problem that comes from a partner in the City of Atlanta, or local non-profit company. Teams solve a real problem in a real context and give partners an opportunity to tap the skills and ingenuity of a student team. Teams comprise technical expertise and public policy expertise, for a truly interdisciplinary approach. Problems explored come from a variety of domains, including transportation, energy, smart urban development, sustainability, and food systems. Contact a program director to learn more about becoming an intern, team mentor/supervisor, or sponsor. Visit the Civic Data Science web page.
Opportunities through the South Big Data Hub
Renata Rawlings-Goss, Executive Director of the South Big Data Hub
Director of Industry Engagement for IDEaS
The South Big Data Innovation Hub, operationally run as a center of IDEaS at Georgia Tech, was established with an NSF award. It both creates and promotes data science educational opportunities in Atlanta and throughout a 16-state southern region. The South Big Data Hub website lists several hub-run educational programs available to students at many experience levels and institution types, including diversity-promoting programs. The South Hub also publishes a newsletter containing data science educational and employment opportunities to its extensive and valuable talent network of nearly 900 students, faculty, government, nonprofit, and industry data science practitioners across the South. Visit the hub website or contact Georgia Tech's South Hub Program Manager Kendra Lewis-Strickland at klewis-strickland@gatech.edu.
