Strategic Initiatives
Advanced Manufacturing
Georgia Tech's research on advanced manufacturing ranges from nanoscale additive manufacturing to advanced logistics and new materials development. Our strengths include security technology for additive processes, development of scalable nanoscale fabrication, advanced composite repair and verification, and more.
Aerospace
More than a dozen labs associated with the School of Aerospace Engineering bring together graduate students, research engineers, and specialized equipment related to specific research areas. Many aerospace faculty are also involved in Institute-level collaborative centers, working groups, and labs.
Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Georgia Tech is advancing artificial intelligence through discovery, interdisciplinary research, and education for a sustainable future. AI Hub at Georgia Tech is home too all AI research centers, labs, and institutes.
The Arts
The Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts explores conventional humanities and social science research through a technological lens. Nearly 300 faculty members have proven expertise across 30 major research areas and multiple individual research domains.
Bioengineering and Biomanufacturing
Georgia Tech is building a campus community, and one with our external partners, that catalyzes, cultivates, and deploys interdisciplinary research and education in bioengineering and biosciences in support of our economy and society.
Business
Faculty and Ph.D. students from the Scheller College of Business collaborate with industry to carry out leading-edge business analytics, international business, and sustainable business research. Industry-academia partnerships foster thought leadership and innovation to move these fields forward.
Climate
Georgia Tech has extensive research expertise in climate science, energy policy, energy technology, and sustainable business, which support a host of activities in the classroom, across the state, and beyond. Cross-college research projects draw on the vast expertise of our faculty, students, and staff in energy, climate, and sustainability research and leveraging the on-going work of existing research centers across Georgia Tech.
Cybersecurity
Georgia Tech is creating new cybersecurity solutions to strengthen national defense, ensure economic continuity, and protect individual freedom. Through our research, we can forecast, overcome, and confront emerging cyber threats. Research areas include AI and security, data mining and analytics, mobile and wireless communications, and more.
Data Science
Data science is an interdisciplinary field concerned with systems, storage, software, algorithms, and applications for extracting knowledge or insights from data. Data-driven research is also commonplace in many fields of sciences and engineering, where direct observations, instrumentation, or simulations generate datasets that must be analyzed with domain-specific knowledge.
Design
The College of Design innovates at the intersection of design, research, and technology. Their six research centers focus on topics including city and regional development, the healthcare environment, accessibility, and new ways to create music.
Electrification
Electrification uses electricity to power services that previously used other energy sources, like fossil fuels. It’s a method of decarbonizing energy use in transportation, manufacturing, and other sectors. Georgia Tech researchers are advancing electrification by making the battery technology used in this process safer, more cost-effective, and longer-lasting.
Energy
Georgia Tech researchers are creating energy technologies and systems that deliver secure, affordable, and reliable energy now and into the future. Energy innovation spans all six colleges, fostering a multidisciplinary approach to solving the most pressing energy problems.
Evolution
Georgia Tech researchers are investigating the origins of life, from changes in living organisms to the transformation of molecules billions of years ago that allowed life to emerge. Determining the origins of life is an important scientific question that significantly impacts a broad range of scientific fields.
Humanities and Social Sciences
Research in this area focuses on the dynamics of modern globalization—examining societies and nations as they experience rapid scientific discovery and profound technological change. Research topics include the history of technology/engineering and society, global cities and urban society, agriculture, health, and the environment, and modern global history/science, technology, and nationalism.
Hydrogen
Many consider hydrogen to be a promising clean energy carrier and storage option for renewable energy such as solar and wind. Georgia Tech researchers are exploring innovative ways to produce, use, transport, and store hydrogen.
Hypersonics
Vehicles that fly at hypersonic speeds – Mach 5 and beyond – create significant technology challenges. Georgia Tech supports hypersonics research in hybrid advanced propulsion systems, aerodynamic theory and experimental verification, novel control systems, and advanced communications technologies.
The Georgia Tech Hypersonics Center of Excellence is a multi-disciplinary collaboration across Georgia Tech and the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI). The mission of the center is to develop new capabilities, transition, technologies, and train the future work force in order to enhance U.S. technological leadership and ensure U.S. national security.
Materials
Materials research at Georgia Tech is the foundation of many new technologies that improve our lives, including advances in polymers and macromolecules, nanostructures and materials for engineered devices, materials and interfaces for catalysis and separations, and more.
Neuroscience
Neuroscience and neuroengineering research are found across multiple schools and colleges at Georgia Tech and span a wide range of interests, many of which pivot on cutting-edge technology. Our researchers develop and translate interdisciplinary and innovative solutions to better understand the complexity of the nervous system, treat neurological diseases and injuries, and augment neural function.
Pediatric Medicine
Georgia Tech researchers partner with clinicians to develop innovative technology that saves children’s lives. We’ve created 3D-printed tracheal splints that help babies breathe, a drug delivery technique designed to protect kids from RSV, and an app that screens kids for anemia without blood draws.
Public Policy
The School of Public Policy aims to be a global leader in foundational knowledge, policies, and governance of the scientific, engineering, and innovation ecosystem. Major research areas include science and technology policy, energy, climate, and environmental policy, and more.
Quantum Computing
Georgia Tech is pursuing advances in quantum information systems hardware and software. This includes new classes of ion traps for computing and sensing, error correction approaches relying on qubit diversity, specialized quantum testbeds for studying new technologies, and quantum techniques for materials and chemical development.
Semiconductors
As the U.S. rebuilds its semiconductor infrastructure at home, Georgia Tech serves as a vital partner – to train the microelectronics workforce, drive future microelectronics advances, and provide unique fabrication and packaging facilities for industry, academic and government partners to develop and test new solutions.
Sustainability
Georgia Tech is integrating academics, research, and industry to create a more sustainable future. Our Smart Energy Campus Program uses Georgia Tech as a living laboratory where researchers collect and analyze data from campus-wide energy utility systems. And the Carbon Neutral Energy Solutions (CNES) Laboratory—Georgia Tech’s first LEED Platinum building—allows experts to team up to solve technological challenges in clean energy.
