Tech Watching for Possible Federal Government Partial Shutdown

As students, faculty, and staff leave campus for the holidays and semester break, Georgia Tech officials will be keeping a watchful eye on Washington, D.C. There, negotiators will be working to head off a partial federal government shutdown that could affect campus at the start of spring semester.

Federal government agencies receive funding through a series of appropriations bills, and funding for some agencies has already been approved. However, appropriations bills that support agencies including the National Science Foundation, NASA, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Department of Commerce have not yet been signed.

Federal agencies without an appropriations bill are scheduled to run out of money on Dec. 21.

Georgia Tech administrators have been meeting to assess the potential impact on campus and making contingency plans to manage a potential shutdown. Principal investigators should stay in contact with their program managers at federal funding agencies. Additional information will be provided should a partial government shutdown occur.
